Windows 10 Update is Stuck Problem

A very common issue which many users face is that the Windows 10 update gets stuck. Follow the steps provided below to fix this problem:

Symptoms showing Windows 10 update is stuck:

If you can see any of the following commands or instruction on your screen, then that means the installation of Windows update is stuck:

• Preparing to configure Windows. Do not turn off your computer.

• Getting Windows ready.

• Please do not power off or unplug your machine. Installing update x of x.

• Working on updates, x% complete. Don’t turn off your computer.

• Configuring Windows updates, x% complete. Don’t turn off your computer.

• Keep your PC on until this is done. Installing updates x of x.

There can be a slight change in the language of these instructions depending upon the version of Windows you have.

Solutions when the Windows update gets stuck:

Follow the solutions provided below so that you can easily use your computer again:

Solution 1 – Turn off and on:

No wonder how basic this method sounds but turning off and on your device works most of the time.

By doing so, the temporary memory from the system will get removed and everything will restart from the beginning.

• If your system is working normally and only the updates tab has got stuck then restart it normally.

• If the system has completely frozen off, then press and hold the power button for few seconds to initiate a hard reset.

Solution 2 – Use Windows update troubleshooter:

The troubleshooter program helps in finding the problem and fixing it on its own. Follow the steps to run the troubleshooter:

1. Firstly, right-click on the start menu and choose settings.

2. Now, click on Update & Security and then on troubleshoot.

3. If Windows identifies the problem and has any solution then it will be listed under the recommended troubleshooting section.

4. Now, click on Windows update which is present under the get-up and running section. Then, click on ‘run the troubleshooter’ to start this process.

5. A new window will now appear on your screen and will start looking for issues. If it finds a problem, then it will get the problem fixed on its own and will also inform you of that.

6. If it detects no issues, then it will ask for some feedback or to close the window.

However, it is worth noting that not every issue can get fixed with the troubleshooter program but if there’s a prominent issue, it might get fixed.

Solution 3 – Remove temporary Windows update files:

Sometimes the Windows update gets stuck due to broken or encrypted files. Follow these steps to resolve this problem.

  1. Right-click on the Windows start menu and then select Windows Power Shell(Admin).
  2. A new window will open, type “net stop wuauserv” and “net stop bits” to disable services required before deleting files.
  3. In the PowerShell window, type “Remove-Item – path c:\\Windows\SoftwareDistribution”. Now type “Y” or “A”. Now, the files would have got deleted.
  4. Further, in the same Powershell window, type “net start wuauserv” and “net start bits”. This will restart those services which were disabled initially.
  5. Right-click on the start menu and then choose settings.
  6. Then, click on Windows updates and then select “check for updates”.

Now this will force the Windows to download the updates again on its own and then it will also try to reinstall it.

Solution 4 – Initiate a scan for viruses:

Windows updates getting stuck due to viruses is one of the main reason for this problem. If there’s a virus on your system, then it might stop your device from installing the latest update.

Therefore, it is vital to keep an antivirus in your system and scan your system from time to time.

Solution 5 – Revert your Windows installation using system restore:

Sometimes, an update gets stuck because the file gets broken in between. Though this doesn’t work always but you can opt for Windows system restore to put Windows back to a few stages:

1. Open the run dialog box by pressing Win + R key. Then, type “sysdm.cpl SystemProperties” and then click on “OK”.

2. Now on the new window, click on system restore and then click on the “Next” button.

3. Now, select the restore point before the update got failed. Then, click on next to continue.

4.Then click on “finish”. Now your Windows will get restored to the selected point of time.

5. As soon as this process ends, initiate the Windows update again.

Solution 6 – Use safe mode:

This mode is a sort of advanced type of restart where the necessary basic apps and codes gets loaded into the memory

Follow these steps to enable safe mode:

  1. Press Win + I to open the settings.
  2. Now, go to the “Update & security” section, then look onto the menu present on left and then choose the recovery option.
  3. Now, on the advanced startup section of the recovery screen, click on the “restart now” option.
  4. After your system restarts, the computer will ask you to “choose an option”.
  5. Now, go to the troubleshoot and then advanced options and then on startup settings. Next, click on restart.
  6. Your system will restart and while it does so, choose safe mode or press the F4 key.

Solution 7 – Check the Windows update utility:

If you want to know whether your device is up to date then Windows 10 makes it easier to find out. Follow these steps:

  1. Open troubleshoot menu.
  2. Then, click on advanced options.
  3. Select “view your update history”.
  4. Now, all the recently installed successful updates will be visible on your screen. Furthermore, you can uninstall either of them for troubleshooting.

Solution 8 – Full Windows reset:

If you use this option, then all the system files present on your device will get back to their original state (personal files won’t get damaged).

Follow these steps to perform a full Windows reset:

  1. Open control panel.
  2. Go to the “settings” section.
  3. Click on update and recovery and then select recovery.
  4. Now, look for ” remove everything and reinstall windows” and then click on “get started”.
  5. Then, follow the instructions provided on the screen.

Conclusion –

These were some of the easy-to-go-through for fixing your stuck Windows. If you are still unable to fix your windows then you might need to get your windows reinstalled. However, for such a scenario, always consult a professional to avoid any data loss.
